What are the CA Core+ Specifications
CA Core+ is Canada’s national core set of essential HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) profiles for data exchange. Its agnostic characteristics are designed to support consistent interoperability across common use cases and jurisdictional health systems by defining a standard for healthcare FHIR profiles, data elements, value sets, constraints, and more.
It is an expression of the Canadian Core Data for Interoperability (CACDI) as FHIR profiles. As a subset of the Pan-Canadian Health Data Content Framework, the CACDI defines a standardized set of essential health data elements and associated value sets to enable seamless interoperability and data exchange within the Canadian healthcare landscape.
Why was CA Core+ Developed
CA Core+ was developed in partnership with the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) to provide a foundation for consistent and efficient information sharing across the healthcare system as Canada's national standard for healthcare data exchange. Together, clinicians, technology vendors, Indigenous health leaders, researchers, policymakers, and international standards organizations have been engaged to ensure alignment with both global best practices and Canada's unique healthcare landscape.
Ca Core+ addresses interoperability challenges by providing a set of standards and implementation guidelines to ensure health data can be consistently shared and used across different systems, provinces, and healthcare settings.
